12 Weeks - Dimples, Bubbles and Snuggles

Another month has flown by.

Things I've learned and love about Jordan

She makes all sorts of faces in her sleep. I often see her smile after a middle of the night feeding in the dim light of our bedroom.

Sometimes she "sings" with me when I sing "I'm Just a Little Black Rain Cloud" to her.

I love watching her discover the world around her. Like yesterday I carried her around the house, showing her and telling her about each room. She was so content as she was taking it all in.

Her lips look just like her Daddy's.

She can surprise me with a smile at the most unexpected times. Sometimes it's after fussing and she just decides to be happy instead. Or like the other morning when she pooped while I was nursing her and it immediately went everywhere. Jason and I went into scramble mode and it took the two of us, some creative de-clothing, and lots of wipes to get the situation under control. As soon as we laid her back down she gave us the biggest smile. Stinker.

She has the most kissable knees.

I enjoy it when she is in "snuggle bunny" mode. It makes it hard to put her down and a lot of the time I don't. Like my aunt said to me, we have kids so we could spoil them, right?

She has the most incredible bubble making skills.

Sometimes she will just stare at us with a smirk on her face. We will laugh and she will just hold that smirk as if she knows she is entertaining her parents.

Her little voice is the sweetest sound.

She is incredibly fascinated with the television. I will turn her away and she does her best impression of an owl trying to keep her eyes on it.

Her eyes are big, round and beautifully blue.

I love watching her try to suck on her hands. She prefers the right one but sometimes it won't come to her so she has to go to it.

She loves to raise her eyebrows. She has so many expressions and her eyebrows play such a big part. Sometimes she only raises one which will get a laugh out of me every time.

When she is almost full from nursing she will throw her arm over her face and be totally relaxed. It looks so dramatic.

Her chin has a dimple.

She makes a sort of whimper when she is really hungry and knows she is about to be fed. It's a little sad but very cute.

8 Weeks - New Sights and Sounds

We officially have smiles and coos!

It would be hard to recap the last month. Hard because it's all happened in a sleep deprived blur. No, it's really not that bad. I had no idea my body would function so well on such little sleep though. I've spent the last month feeding, rocking, feeding, swaddling, feeding, holding, feeding and loving our baby girl. Needless to say she has done quite a bit of growing with all the eating going on. We have an appointment next week and I can't wait to see what she is weighing these days.

We also started to come to realization that our baby had colic. The horrible episodes of crying (Jordan) caused lots of tears (mine). I realized why my parents still talk about me having colic as a baby. Twenty-nine years later and they still sigh when they hear the dreadful word. Well I owe my gratitude and sanity to Dr. Karp and his book (The Happiest Baby on the Block). Thanks to him we are experts at the 5 S's and they work like a charm. We spent about two weeks questioning what the magic trick was to helping her and now I know it's 5 tricks. I need to send that man a seriously large batch of brownies.

Speaking of brownies...

Out of desperation I also cut dairy and soy out of my diet. I daydream about big glasses of milk and macaroni and cheese. Of course, I did that before I took it out of my diet. What I wouldn't do for a big slice of chocolate cake right now. I'm not even sure if it was necessary but when your baby is crying for no apparent reason you will try whatever you can to help. For now cupcakes and ice cream will stay in my dreams and off my lips (and off my hips).

I think Jordan has grown up overnight. I became sort of obsessed with trying to make her smile at me and I started to realize that I was just not that interesting! Well thankfully Jordan decided today that we should have a little "conversation". She told me she was happy through smiles, coos and that delightful sound they make when they suck air into their lungs that almost mimics a laugh. It was some of the most fun I've had with her yet. I even got one of those smiles on camera. Picture time.

The Story of Jordan's Birth

What better day to tell Jordan's birth story than on her expected delivery day! We already passed our cesarean day which would have been April 28th if she hadn't decided to make her own birthday.

Happy one month sweet girl.

Now the story of how she surprised us on that early April morning...

I started feeling cramps in my back on April 6th around 2 in the morning. They came in waves but not necessarily with any pattern. I knew those could be contractions but they were definitely different than my preterm labor contractions. I hadn't slept a wink and continued to stay up and monitor my cramps which were becoming more painful but still irregular. Jason woke up to me sitting on the bed crying and started rubbing my back. I think I was crying mostly because I was confused and didn't know what to do. Some of the cramps were long and intense, some were short and not that bad. I told Jason to go back to sleep and that I was going to lay in the living room where I might be more comfortable. I didn't want to tell him that I was thinking about packing my hospital bag. He went back to sleep and I started gathering my things but a big part of me was in denial. I was in denial even when I was on my hands and knees breathing through the pain. At 4:15am I woke Jason up and told him we needed to go to the hospital. He asked if he could take a shower to wake himself up and I thought he was being sarcastic so I told him if he could shower and be ready in five minutes then he could. Next thing I knew he was turning on the water... Luckily I didn't feel panicked so my sense of humor was still in tact. Lucky for him I mean.

We gave some extra pets to a sleepy Beagle and by 4:45am we were on the highway.

We fully expected to be sent home and that is why I didn't pack Jordan's coming home outfit. I mostly took things that I knew I would want for an overnight stay and figured we may even be home before breakfast. We arrived, got a room, got me a gown and I was attached to the familiar monitors. I explained what was happening to the nurse and she said she would check me to see what was going on. Well when she told us that I was 3cm and 90% effaced I wasn't sure whose face was more full of shock, mine or Jason's. The doctor on call said to hydrate me to see if that would stop the contractions (which at this time I realized were definitely contractions and were getting pretty painful). I knew it wouldn't work since I had been drinking loads of water the whole pregnancy. We waited, things didn't change, so the doctor came in to do an ultrasound to check Jordan's position. I could have saved him the trouble because I knew she was breech but I'm sure they want to make sure before they slice you open and put your intestines on a table. I was happy that we had to wait long enough for a shift change and they were able to contact my OB. At around 8:45am they let us know that my doctor was on his way and we were having our c-section around 9am!

This is when the term "whirlwind" comes to mind.

Everything went very fast. All of a sudden the triage room was full of people from the surgical team, people taking my blood, the anesthesiologist coming in to explain how they would give me a combined epidural and before I knew it I was being wheeled to the OR. It took them five (yes FIVE) times to get the epidural in. A poke to numb, a poke with the epidural needle... all this while they were futilely telling me to relax. My OB actually made it in there while they were still trying and he took over comforting me. He put my head in his chest, rubbed my shoulders and his presence was such a huge relief. Finally they got it to work (my spine has a bit of a curve and that is what was causing the problem). I laid back, they put up the curtain and Jason was back by my side. At 9:45am we heard our baby crying and I was overcome with emotion, tears, and joy.

My doctor brought her around the curtain for us to get the first glimpse of our beautiful baby girl. Then she was cleaned, weighed, swaddled and brought back to us for a brief closer look. I really got to see her face this time and I said something (cannot remember what now) but I swear she smiled. Well, no, she DID smile. Try and tell me different, I dare you. They brought her in close so I could kiss her right cheek. I remember saying how soft she was. Such a perfectly sweet little cheek. Then she was out the doors and Jason and I were left to try and absorb what had just happened. A few minutes later Jason was looking a little pale and took a trip out in the hallway for some air. A lot had happened in a very short amount of time.

They had Jordan in the NICU for about 6 hours because of her low blood sugar but she graduated to the nursery on our floor by that first evening. That first day is very fuzzy. I was totally exhausted and could hardly stay awake to talk to all the visitors we had. We stayed at the hospital until Friday and she did VERY well for a 36 week baby. Their only concern was she lost 9% of her body weight and they don't want them losing any more than 10%. Her lowest weight was 4lbs 13.9oz and she's been gaining ever since!

Now we have been enjoying her for a whole month. Jason and I have laughed at the way she coughs when she get angry. Sometimes she whimpers in her sleep. It's sort of sad and sweet at the same time. There have been times where she is so sleepy you can move her limbs without her taking any notice. My favorite times are when she is wide awake, looking around and discovering her world. We've already kissed her a million times.

She is the most precious gift.

This coming weekend is Mother's Day and I feel so honored to be able to celebrate the holiday as a mother for the first time. Me! A mother! She is the best answer to my prayers.

Celebrating the Arrival of Jordan Mae!

I fully intend to come back and tell her birth story in words, but for now it will be in pictures. Jordan Mae was born by cesarean section on April 6, 2010. She surprised us by coming four weeks early but I'm so happy to say she is healthy and was able to come home with us right away. My blog is a bit behind so I will start where I left off...

First of all, we finished her room a few weeks ago. I loved the idea of the bird theme as soon as I saw the bedding and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

My gift to Jason

On Easter Sunday I decided to have my oldest sister take some pregnancy photos of Jason and I. It ended up being a cloudy and rainy day so we just took a few inside for the time being. I thought we would have time to get some more later but little did we know...

Signs of Spring

I don't know if there is a better time than Spring to be on the verge of having a baby. It just fits, doesn't it? The world is becoming colorful again after the gloomy winter months. Flowers are beginning to peek out from the ground (or those might be weeds if you are looking at our yard, but some weeds are pretty). The Bradford Pears on our street bloomed and have now left what appears to be white confetti on the street and sidewalks thanks to the kite flying weather this last week. The sun is out and the air is warm. But best of all I saw this happen in the last couple of days.

That's our Angel Tree we planted last year on our due date. I waited and waited for it to bloom all summer and then the day before I had my IUI in August it finally did. I took it as a good omen. Once again our tree is brightening our backyard with signs of life, hope and beauty.

35 Is the Magic Number

I am 35 weeks today AND I have 35 days left until my due date!

My newest adventure is researching cloth diapering. "Naive first time mom syndrome"? Perhaps, but plenty of moms do it (and claim to love it) so I know it can be done. I am now becoming proficient in a whole new world of acronyms. First it was the trying to conceive acronyms (ttc, dpo, wto...) , then it became pregnancy acronyms (ftm, c/s, bf...), and now it's cloth diapering (os, BG, FB...). Cloth diapering has come a long way since the plain white cloths with pins. I won't bore you with all the details but let's just say that there are so many options that you will wonder if your college degree really means much about your level of intelligence. Thank goodness for all the helpful mamas on the internet. The initial investment is a little intimidating but the operative word there is "investment". We will start out with "sposies" and hopefully switch over to cloth after the first month or so (either part time or full time, we will see). I first mentioned the idea of cloth diapering to Jason back in the fall and there was a definite look of disgust on his face. I think he's slowly coming around to the idea and what man doesn't want to hear "It will save us money"? Especially if you know my Jason.

I am happy to say I am done with my 17P injections! I was supposed to get one this week but my prescription was out and my Peri said it would be fine to skip this last one. My rear end is thankful since the last few shots seem to have angered it. For some reason I started getting bruises, knots and itching at the injection site (which is so attractive, let me tell you).

I have an appointment on Friday with my OB and from here on out I will be seeing him on a weekly basis. I can't believe we are already to that point, it's really exciting! It still looks like a cesarean section is in our future but a healthy Guppy is all I'm worried about.

One last thing. My positive note for the week.
I think her room is the happiest room in our house. I've dreamed about that room becoming a nursery for years, even stepping in there a time or two to dream about what it could look like. Now I get to walk in there and enjoy what we have prepared for her. Hopefully there will be picture post before the weeks is over.

The Beginnings of a Daddy

34 Weeks today! That means we are down to 3 weeks until I'm term and 8 weeks to our due date. My doctor's guesstimate on her weight last Friday was about 5 pounds (just by feel, I think that's pretty cool and we will someday -soon- see how accurate he is). Guppy continues to get the hiccups at least twice a day and I enjoy watching my belly move around while she wiggles and squirms. The TV may be on but belly watching is a lot more fun.

I'm at the point where it's easy to complain about the aches and pains of a third trimester pregnancy. As much as it hurts sometimes, I am not here to complain about any of it. That would be a disservice to myself and anyone else who has prayed and prayed for a baby. I would rather list the reasons I am so happy and so blessed. I think each week until she is born I'm going to focus on something positive. On that note... My husband has taken such good care of me this whole pregnancy. When I was on modified bed rest he would fetch me water without me asking. I don't think I have vacuumed since I became pregnant and at this point he has completely taken over dish washing (and the occasional dog washing). Watching him put the crib together with my dad, putting together the bassinet, hanging new blinds in the nursery, etc., has been so fun to see. He's great at taking care of his wife and I know he will be great at taking care of his daughter. I love that man with all of my heart. Ok, if I don't stop then I'm going to have to fetch the kleenex.

And now I'm happy to share my shower pictures with you. I don't know if anyone will ever realize what a special day this was for us!
